What is the Family Life Academy? |
The Kansas District Family Life Academy is an intentional congregational leadership development plan, conducted over a two-year period, for congregations whose mission and vision includes family ministry. The Academy will lead them to become a regional mentoring congregation for family ministry. This article describes the main elements of the Family Life Academy and the application process. The Family Life Committee of the Kansas District now presents a new way to equip leaders to integrate family ministry practices into local congregations through the Family Ministry Basics, one-day workshop. See workshop dates below. |

Why
a Family Life Academy?
The District has in the past coordinated training events and guest speakers for congregations wanting to grow in the area of family ministry. The Academy is intended to take training and development to a new level by providing an ongoing process to develop and equip congregations for the conduct of family ministry. These congregations will then serve as the focal points for family ministry in their region of the state. |

Who
should apply to attend?
The Academy is unique in providing training for leader teams, rather than individuals. Congregations who have a passion for family ministry are encouraged to apply. It is expected that the senior pastor, any staff responsible for family ministry, and at least three key congregational leaders will attend. |

How is the Academy structured? |
Instruction will take place over a two-year period. Each year consists of four weekend learning events in September, November, January and March. This is followed by a time to design and implement practical ways to meet the needs of family ministry in the congregation based on what was learned in the four learning events. |

Why all the emphasis on leadership and team development? |
Integral to both years is leadership and team development. The Academy makes the assumption that effective family ministry requires healthy leadership processes. To that end, a significant learning outcome of each weekend is in the area of leadership and team development. |

What's
the expected outcome from all of this?
| Congregations successfully completing this program of development will be better equipped for family ministry and will also be certified as regional mentoring congregations. It is expected that these congregations will partner with the District, Synod, and institutions of higher learning to help shape family ministry in their area. | |||||

How
much will all of this cost? |
Tuition has been set at $2400 per year per congregation for a five-member leadership team. This includes all instruction costs, two lunches and one dinner (at each event), and some books. Lodging and transportation expenses are in addition to this cost. Extra members of the team would cost $200 per year. Individualized payment plans are available. Grant and scholarship money is being sought, especially for smaller rural congregations. Cost should not discourage your application. The application fee is $100 per congregation, and is due with the application at the District office no later than August 15th. |
